In 2015, I felt the winds of change blow into my life in a big way. I had been traveling the Southeast for the last four or five years doing a weird mix of evangelism and conservation messages in schools and churches under the banner of “Catching Creation.” I was burnt out, jaded, and financially broke. It turns out that “living on faith” sometimes leaves you wanting.
That book is on a short list in my “to read” pile. I saw the movie years ago at the urging of many people who said his path was like mine. It was really good.
Your experience reveals a profound truth: Leading with love doesn't mean martyring yourself. Service to others requires sustainable structures. Oftentimes, we find ourselves in service to others while being directed by a person in service to self mode.
What a great read. It reminds me that Christians are far from perfect. I’m so sorry you had to endure that when you were doing what you knew God had called you to do. I am praying that your job is safe among all the upheaval going on. I can tell from your writings you are in a much better place now. Thanks for sharing! Tell Jen hey for me! Love and Hugs!
I’ll tell Jess you said hey, haha, we’ve been hanging more frequently with Aaron and his wife lately and it’s been cool. It was a wild season but it helped shape me and gave me valuable experiences. If anything it showed me how little we can survive on and to trust God no matter what it looks like or what external voices think I’m crazy for the choices I make. haha.
Never change that attitude stated in the last few lines: never live in fear You have what it takes You will and on your feet
Yes sir! I believe it, and I’m gonna have to make it to DC soon and hang out with you.
Great share.
Unfortunately the experience you had with churches is not uncommon.
It brings to mind Rick’s favorite quote by Brennan Manning in the Vagabond Gospel. “The greatest cause of atheism in the world today is Christians”
I love your attitude about the possibility of losing your job.
There are so many possibilities & adventures waiting for us if we don’t live in fear!

Absolutely man! I’ve definitely learned the hard way that if you constantly give all you’ve got you’ll have nothing left to give.
