Night of Nights: Part 1 -- Have you ever found a place where you feel at home? A place that seems to have infinite possibilities and mysteries around every corner? The North Carolina Sandhills is just such a place for me. I remember the first time I visited this hallowed ground in pursuit of reptiles and amphibians. I was around 18 years old and fresh out of high school and basic training in the US Army. My love affair with this region is also inextricably intertwined with the military. This is because the Army still uses the area for training.
I lived in San Diego for thirty years before moving to North Carolina. My second husband was a big fan of snakes. Before I knew him, he would go out at night with a friend. The friend drove while he laid on the car hood searching for rattlesnakes. He would get free entry to the San Diego Zoo by bringing them a snake every so often. I'm glad he was over that by the time I met him. He was bitten twice by a rattlesnake. Linda Loegel Hemby - Beach Chair Books
That’s hardcore! I don’t think we’ve ever tried laying on the hood while road cruising. Getting bitten would be horrible. Thank you so much for reading.
I enjoyed the article. Also, my third husband is laid to rest at the Sand Hills Military Cemetery, so your article brought to mind two diverse reactions. If interested, I would invite you to read my posts at lindaloegelhemby.substack.com.
Always love your adventure stories. The Sandhills are a very close relative of the type of land just north of Tampa where I grew up. Brooksville, Inverness, Hernando FL area. So I can certainly relate to this story! Keep em coming my friend!
Oh yea! It’s basically the same habitat except even more diversity down there. Breaking this article into 4 parts was a fun exercise and I’m excited for everyone to read them. But I have a feeling I’ll be writing a new adventure or two from down there soon too!
