Stan. Had to log out and log back in. It would not let me leave a comment til now!!! I remember collecting lightning bugs as a kid in Franklin NC when we came up on vacation every year from Florida. What great memories. We still have a few around the property here, but not many. You are so right about our ecosystems. Everything depends on balance. I know that’s how the Lord intended it. Don’t stop writing. Love it!! Love and hugs!

I guess I never thought about it, are they not in Florida?

Nope. Not in St Pete. I’m sure they are in rural north FL. We had “love bugs” every October down there. Windshields covered. They actually had wash stations at rest areas so you could wash the bugs off. It was horrible!

I used to run a race put on by the Mangum Track Club in Richmond County, NC, near the town of Ellerbe. The 50-miler always started at 6 PM on a hot summer day. Running all night along the PeeDee river offered a spectacular light show put on by the lightnin' bugs. I'd hate to think that future generations would be able to enjoy that part of living in the sandhills.

Oh dude! That area is so amazing. Actually planning to get out to Scotland / Richmond counties next week hopefully. I spend a lot of time around Camp Mackall area for wildlife.

Also, not to be an algorithm alarmist, but I saw the same notification on the demise of fireflies in my feed yesterday...

Likely just the time of year those things make their rounds. If you’re interested in any of that stuff you should check out “Night Magic” by Leigh Ann Henion. Talks a lot about nocturnal creatures and darkness in general and the perils they face. It was a great book.
